A network of more than 1,000 independent sales agents strategically located throughout North America markets the services. Independent sales agents in the carrier group receive a commission generally between 5 and 8 percent of the revenue they generate. Multimodal independent sales agents generally receive a percentage of the gross profit, revenue less the cost of the transportation, from each load they generate.
Business capacity owners are independent business owners who own and operate one or more trucks. These third-party business capacity owners deliver Landstar's services in the truckload market. Landstar delivers multimodal transportation services through business capacity owners and through contractual arrangements with air carriers, railroads and other transportation capacity providers.
Business capacity owners in the carrier group who provide tractor power receive a percentage of the revenue generated for the freight hauled and a larger percentage for providing both a tractor and a trailer. Multimodal business capacity owners generally receive a percentage of the revenue generated by the haul depending on the type and timing of the shipment. Railroad and air carrier capacity providers receive a fixed amount per load.
Landstar’s flexible business model results in a highly variable cost structure. Landstar’s variable cost approach may result in lower capital investment and a higher return on invested capital. Historically, Landstar has generated cash flow, or earnings before interest, income taxes, depreciation and amortization, that has exceeded its capital requirements.
